Correlation between Parathyroid Hormone, Bone Alkaline Phosphatase, and N- Telopeptide of Type I Collagen in Diabetic Patients on Regular Hemodialysis, Compared to Non-diabetic Patients

چکیده
INTRODUCTION: Hemodialysis (HD) patients often have a characteristic abnormality of bone metabolism that is known as renal osteodystrophy (ROD). ROD in HD patients with diabetes mellitus is characterized by lower plasma parathyroid hormone levels and a lower bone turnover rate than nondiabetic controls [1]. Bone remodeling is an ongoing cyclical process characterized by two activities: bone formation by osteoblasts and bone resorption by osteoclasts. These two events are normally coupled and interacted to each other. Several studies have showed that bone formation and bone resorption marker well correlate each other in overall HD patients. However, we can obtain no previous study which discusses this correlation within the diabetic HD patients. In this article, we would like to study the interaction between bone cells by studying the correlation between the specific bone metabolism markers in diabetic patients on regular HD, and also study whether the diabetic patients have some difference in this interaction compared to non-diabetic HD patients.

Effects of Raloxifene on Bone Metabolism in Hemodialysis Patients With Type 2 Diabetes
BACKGROUND Osteoporosis and chronic kidney disease are common conditions in older adults, and often occur concurrently. Bone disease is caused by increased bone turnover accompanying secondary hyperparathyroidism, and by factors such as bone metabolic disorder accompanying kidney disease and postmenopausal or age-related osteoporosis, even in hemodialysis patients. Raloxifene is commonly used f...
متن کاملSignificant association between bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and vascular calcification of the hand arteries in male hemodialysis patients.
BACKGROUND/AIMS Bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (BAP) hydrolyzes pyrophosphate, which inhibits vascular calcification. We examined association between serum BAP and vascular calcification of male hemodialysis patients. METHODS Hand roentgenography of 167 male maintenance hemodialysis patients was conducted, and visible vascular calcification of the hand arteries was evaluated. Serum levels...
متن کاملCorrelation of new bone metabolic markers with conventional biomarkers in hemodialysis patients.
BACKGROUND New bone metabolic markers have become available clinically for evaluating chronic kidney disease mineral and bone disorders (CKD-MBD). The aim of this study was to correlate these new bone metabolic markers with conventional markers in regular hemodialysis (HD) patients. METHODS One hundred forty three HD patients underwent cross-sectional assessment. Two bone formation markers, b...
متن کاملBone mineral density and bone metabolism in hemodialysis patients. Correlation with PTH, 25OHD3 and leptin.
BACKGROUND Bone metabolism disorders in hemodialysed patients (HD) involve several humoral factors, of which PTH plays the central role. Leptin is usually found increased in renal failure and its link with bone metabolism has not been elucidated. We investigated the BMD and bone metabolism in association with serum PTH, 25OHD3 and leptin in HD patients. METHODS We measured bone alkaline phosp...
متن کاملIntensification of Anemia by Secondary Hyperparathyroidism in Hemodialysis Patients
The excessive amounts of parathyroid hormone in secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPTH) is suggested to interfere with normal erythropoiesis. In SHPTH, during chronic renal failure, due to the impairment of erythropoietin synthesis, this effect is more pronounced. In the present study the role of secondary hyperparathyroidism in the severity of anemia was evaluated in hemodialysis patients (n=3...
